Virtual Ability

So this second life group (Virtual Ability) is a support group for people with a wide range of disabilities. This SL group provides members with virtual companionship, encouragement, information (disease-related, resources), etc.
In the short amount of time that we spent chatting with members of this group, we learned some valuable things that we will definitely apply in our career as nurses. Many of the things that they discussed were things that we've previously been exposed to, but were definitely reinforced by their comments. Ethically, a member discussed an experience about discovering that her Dr. was pushing drugs based on bribes- clearly an unethical way of practice. Another thing a member mentioned was about Dr.'s trying everything to prolong their life, while ignoring the quality of life. What the patients prefer is "enjoying life." In addition, some feel that they are not offered all the possible treatments because of the risks and the Dr.'s personal opinion. A member commented about how the choice should be theirs, not the Dr.'s- patients should be provided with all possible treatments and make the decision themselves.

I completely agree with the members of that SL group. I also think that patients should be able to make their own decisions about the treatments they are able to receive. I do think that doctors are concerned about their patients, but sometimes forget to show it.

Good job, you guys. I agree with your thought. It seems so easy to neglect their needs even as health care providers. It will bring up the best patient care if we try to pay attention to our patients little more.
